Learn how I keep produce fresh for 2–3 weeks, reduce food waste, and cut down grocery store trips with better planning and simple storage tips.

I Used To Go Shopping Every Week
I work full-time, and I used to go to the store every week to buy food. Mainly, this was because I couldn’t keep my produce fresh, and I did most of my cooking on the weekends. When I needed fresh vegetables and fruit, I would only buy enough for one week. I avoided buying large batches of fresh produce because I couldn’t keep them fresh. That’s why I didn’t buy a lot of fresh produce at Costco—I didn’t like throwing food away. But I didn’t know how to prolong the life of those items in my fridge.
I knew that mushrooms would spoil if I didn’t use them within the first week. The same was true for greens like parsley, dill, and green onions, so I often didn’t buy them simply because I couldn’t use them all in time.
Finding Ways To Keep Produce Fresh
Currently, I’m working on keeping my food fresh so I can go to the store once every 2–3 weeks. When I started learning how to do that, I realized I had never even considered buying enough produce for more than a week. I always bought just enough for one week, and if I needed something else, I would simply go to the store again.
Smarter Shopping Strategy
Now, with some tips that help me keep my produce fresh longer, I can have a variety of vegetables and fruits that last 2–3 weeks. This allows me to plan differently and consider more options for meals a couple of weeks in advance. It helps me be more intentional, thoughtful, and better prepared, so I don’t run out of pantry or fridge staples—things that would otherwise send me back to the grocery store. It’s a new level of planning and a new way of thinking about my shopping habits.
