Choosing Timeless Over Trendy: Why I’m Shopping Less in 2026

I’m getting off the hamster wheel of consumption that keeps me spending money and my precious time.

When Shopping = Creativity

I used to love shopping. There were times when I would go shopping every day. It didn’t mean that I bought something every day, but I would look around and consider buying something.

I thought it was part of my creative process to look at beautiful things and imagine them in my home or create different outfits with the clothes at the store. I also believed that this was how I developed my taste in fashion and stayed up to date with current design trends.

How Things Started To Change

In 2024, I learned about decluttering and got rid of a lot of stuff in my home. Most of my items I brought to the thrift store. But after I dropped off my things there, I would go into the thrift store again and buy something else. I went there about every two weeks, sometimes even more often. I really needed the extra stuff to leave my house. But as much as I decluttered, I would still go to the thrift store to check out the cute things they had. And of course, I would always find something.

Common Problem

I didn’t realize that this is a typical problem for many people who start decluttering. The only problem was that the satisfaction from the items I found didn’t last long. The magic of purchasing and enjoying something new quickly faded. Soon enough, I found myself decluttering the items I had just recently bought. I didn’t like it, but I kept looking and didn’t stop shopping.

Last year, I decided to go to the thrift store less — about once a month. My house was in much better shape and far more manageable, so I didn’t feel the need to go as often.

I Love Everything I Own

Now, in 2026, I want to change my shopping habits even more. I want to go to the thrift store only once every three months. I’ve reached the point where I don’t actually need anything. I have enough décor, and I love everything I own. If I want to bring something new into my home, I would have to get rid of something else — and I love what I already have so much.

I also have enough clothes and enough kitchen items. I want to be truly intentional about bringing anything new into my home.

Timeless Pieces That Last

I’ve learned that I want timeless designs in my home and in my wardrobe. I want good-quality items that will last and serve me and my family for decades. I don’t want to buy new décor every season. I would rather have just a few beautiful, high-quality pieces that my family will remember and maybe even want to keep after I’m gone. I want to create memories with a few special items instead of owning a ton of cheap things that will be outdated next year. Current trends can be cute, but I’ve seen so many of them at the thrift store shortly after the season ends.

So I’m planning to be even more intentional about going to the thrift store. I will go only four times this year — once every season. I already went in the winter, so my next trip will be in the spring.

I also want to set limits on other stores, though they’re not as tempting to me as the thrift store — mainly because things are so much cheaper at the thrift store. However, if I go too often, it can still cost me a fortune. I hope reducing my visits will save me money in the long run as well.

Habbit Replacement

What am I planning to do instead?

As they say, don’t just eliminate activities from your life — replace them with something better. If something in your behavior feels unhelpful, think of ways to exchange it for something more positive and productive. So what would be a better way to spend my time than shopping?

One thing I’ve already started doing is going to the library. It’s very exciting — almost as exciting as shopping — but it’s free!

I’m also trying to spend more time outside. I’ve become very intentional about that. Instead of going shopping (which is mostly an indoor activity), I plan to spend more time in my garden and go for more walks.

So this is my plan — and I’ll keep you updated on how it goes.
