Discover practical homemaking skills to save money and reduce waste. Learn how preserving produce, cooking at home, and DIY cleaning supplies can transform your budget.

Homemaking And Saving Money

Throughout history, people have relied on their skills to accomplish tasks themselves, aiming to avoid spending money they worked hard to earn. Homemaking is one such skill, yet it is increasingly overlooked and under-appreciated in modern society. While many continue to work diligently to earn a living, they often spend money thoughtlessly, neglecting alternative ways to meet their needs.

I am no exception. One of my goals is to learn how to save money by acquiring new homemaking skills.

Reducing Food Waste

In the United States, food waste ranges from 30% to 40%. For instance, if a family spends $500 a month on food, they end up discarding $150 to $200 worth. The figures are even higher for families with larger food budgets.

To combat this, I’m focusing on preserving the freshness of my groceries to minimize waste. By doing so, I can reduce the frequency of grocery trips while ensuring I have fresh produce at home—a practical way to save money. Additionally, I strive to prepare all meals at home, avoiding the temptation of takeout or dining out.

Making Homemade Cleaning Products

I’ve also started making homemade laundry detergent and some cleaning products. It’s surprisingly simple and has significantly reduced my household expenses.

Sewing And Gardening Skills

Another endeavor has been using my sewing skills to create items like curtains, tablecloths, kitchen towels, and pillowcases—simple projects that save money and add a personal touch to my home.

Though my garden is modest, it brings me joy. I cultivate herbs that not only enhance my cooking but also save money. Perhaps one day, I’ll expand to growing vegetables.

Experimenting with these practices has been a learning journey. Some methods are more effective than others, but I’m passionate about acquiring new skills and discovering more ways to live resourcefully and embrace a simpler lifestyle.
