The secret to a tidy, peaceful home isn’t complicated. Learn how one daily habit—doing the dishes—can make all the difference.

Where To Start?

There are many things we can do in our homes to improve tidiness and cleanliness. There are always items to put away, surfaces to clean, things to rearrange, or systems to implement. It can feel difficult to decide where to start—especially when you’re already overwhelmed and don’t have a clear vision of where to begin.

But there is one thing that can make a big difference in your home. No matter the state of your space or how hard it feels, it is possible to create a noticeable improvement by implementing one simple system.

Start With The Dishes

This is the first step toward order and sanity in your home.

No matter your situation, schedule, or eating habits, we all use our kitchens daily. Even if you use paper plates, there is still basic cleanup to do—washing utensils and wiping surfaces.

I’m talking about a system here, because this is not a one-and-done task. It needs to become a daily routine—at least once a day. And I promise, it won’t take long.

My Struggle With The Dishes

I used to struggle with dishes when I let them pile up for a few days. It would turn into a long, overwhelming chore that I didn’t feel capable of tackling. The longer I waited, the more daunting and time-consuming it became.

Non-Negotiable Tasks

A couple of years ago, I learned about the concept of non-negotiable tasks for the home. These are the things you do no matter what. You don’t need many—just a few essential habits to maintain peace and sanity for yourself and your family.

These tasks shouldn’t take much time—maybe 10–20 minutes a day. They’re no-brainers. You don’t overthink them—you just do them automatically, habitually, every single day.

You do them when you’re tired.
You do them when you’re busy.
You do them even when you’re not feeling well (or you delegate them if needed).

Some people include a load of laundry. Others do a five-minute tidy-up. Some sweep the kitchen floor or wipe down the bathroom. It depends on what helps you feel that your home is under control—a place where you and your family can truly rest.

But for almost everyone, the number one task is the dishes.

Do the dishes every day. Don’t skip a single day. Don’t let them pile up and become overwhelming.

The “Dishes Math” Is Real

After one day, it might take 15–20 minutes to wash the dishes. But if you skip a day, it doesn’t just double—it can take an hour or more. Miss a few days, and the time multiplies quickly. What used to take minutes can turn into hours.

It’s like a snowball—the longer you wait, the bigger it gets.

Why It Takes Longer

There are a few reasons for this. First, food dries onto dishes, making them harder to clean and requiring more soaking and scrubbing. Second, you may not be able to fit everything into the dishwasher at once. You’ll either have to wash some items by hand or run multiple cycles, which can take up your whole day and feel overwhelming.

And mentally, it becomes even harder. Clutter makes it difficult to focus, and you’re more likely to procrastinate when your space feels chaotic.

Don’t lose another day—do the dishes.

It will change the way your home feels, and it will change the way you feel about yourself.
