My Lifetime Struggle With Sore Throat

I have always considered myself a healthy person. I wasn’t a sickly child and didn’t have any major health issues growing up. But there was one minor problem that was very annoying: a sore throat and persistent cough every winter. Because I’d had it for so long and endured it as a norm, I accepted it as part of my life.

When I was 16, I came to Jesus and started attending church. I joined the choir, but my throat continued to be an issue. Years passed, and the problem worsened. What once happened only during winter began to occur in fall and spring as well. After I turned 30, my throat bothered me all year long.

I didn’t want to rely on medication—after a lifetime of tolerating the issue, I tried a few cough syrups but saw no lasting improvement.

In 2021, I contracted COVID‑19, which severely affected my throat and chest. I experienced relentless nightly coughing fits and soreness in my lungs and chest.

My Attempts To Improve My Immune System

Over the years, I experimented with a vegetarian diet. At first, I was very strict—no dairy, only vegetables. I started feeling much better. I stopped coughing during spring, summer, and fall, which was a huge improvement. But in winter, the cough persisted, and I still experienced seasonal fevers two or three times a year.

What Actually Brought a Noticeable Change

For the past year and a half, I’ve also adopted regular fasting. It has significantly boosted my immune system and overall health.

The most recent change has been switching my bread habits. Since last Christmas, I’ve been milling fresh flour and baking my own bread—and even making desserts like cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and pastries using that fresh flour. I now feel far more energetic. I no longer feel that I must fight for every healthy day—avoiding germs at all costs, washing and disinfecting ceaselessly, and worrying everyone around me might spread illness. Working with preschoolers (who are still learning proper hygiene) used to feel like a constant health risk. Now, it’s such a relief to interact freely without anxiously fearing sickness.
