Our bodies are made to heal themselves.
I truly believe we were created by a wise God who knew exactly what He was doing. He designed our bodies with the ability to heal on their own. When we get a small cut, for example, we can see with our own eyes how all the cells around the cut work together to heal it. The blood cells and tissues all work for our good.
And when we get sick with something like a cold or the flu, we need to believe that the same healing process is happening inside our bodies. We need to trust that each cell is fighting to bring healing and recovery.
Doctor Within Our Bodies
What I’m trying to say is that we were created with a kind of “doctor” inside our bodies that works for our good—and we need to learn how to listen to it.
Rest
At one point in my life, I had to learn to rest and not say yes to every activity or engagement that came my way. I learned that if I didn’t have regular, planned rest and didn’t allow my body to recover, it would eventually break down from sickness and force me to rest—without planning, and for a much longer period of time.
Nourishment
I also learned that I shouldn’t eat just because it’s time to eat or because I have a break. Often, we eat according to a schedule, thinking, “I should eat something; it will help me stay strong and productive.” But sometimes the opposite is true. Our bodies must use a lot of energy to digest food. The more tired we feel, the more we think we need to eat—when in fact, resting might be what we actually need. If we’re not truly hungry, we shouldn’t overload our bodies with more work. Instead, we could spend 10 minutes outside getting some vitamin D, doing a light walk, or simply relaxing. Then later, when we’re truly hungry and eat nourishing food, our body will respond with more energy.
Learn To Enjoy Good Food
I also had to train my body to enjoy foods that are good for me. If my habit was to buy cookies and ice cream, I started choosing fruit, nuts, and other healthy treats instead. I also made myself buy vegetables and would ask myself how my mom or grandma might cook them. I stayed open to trying new recipes with vegetables I didn’t grow up eating. It was a journey of trial and error, but over time, we introduced many healthy meals into our diet and stopped eating a lot of unhealthy foods.
“Listen” To Your Body
All of these changes became possible because I started to “listen” to my body and choose what was best for my health. I’m still learning and continue to educate myself about healthy living and what I can apply in this season of my life.
I believe that if God created our bodies with the ability to heal themselves, then He truly wants us to be healthy. I believe He helps and teaches me by guiding me to the right sources of information so that both my family and I can benefit.
